Why It Is The Way It Is
Helltongue is the human name. The speakers beyond the gate call it zan gar zan gar, the sworn tongue. It is not a soft language wearing armor; it is armor that learned to speak. Every choice in it serves one culture: hierarchical, predatory, and bound by oath.
The sworn tongue
The spine of the grammar is not tense or number but weight. Every utterance is one of three things: idle (sha, smoke that drifts), sworn (gar, an oath that binds the speaker), or a bare command. A sworn word stakes your true name on it, and to break a sworn word is to forfeit that name. In a world with no central law, the personal oath is the law. That is why the tongue is named for the oath and not for the throat that speaks it.
Spoken from the chest
There is no l, no p, no f, no b, and no vowel e. Nothing soft survives. The sounds are struck, hissed, and growled, low and from the chest, built to carry a threat. The shape of the mouth that makes them is already a posture of dominance. Softness is not forbidden so much as absent: the body that speaks this never needed it.
The act leads
A sentence opens with what is done, then who did it, then what it was done to. A predator names the deed first. There is no past and no future, only whether an act is finished (tak) or ongoing (zin). You do not promise the future; you swear an oath now, or you do not. Number and gender do not exist. To make many, or to deepen, you simply say the word twice: xum xum, the deep dark.
What it refuses to say
There is no word for love, mercy, peace, equality, or a free gift. These are not oversights. A culture that ranks and hunts and collects debts never lexicalized them. Giving (dov) always creates a debt (dag) in the receiver, so a gift that makes no debt is a contradiction the grammar cannot state. These holes are deliberate, and when you reach for one you are meant to feel it. See The Voids.
It grows from its own bones
The lexicon is small, but it builds. The eye iz gives the verb to see, izu. Stone plus realm makes a city. Hunt plus the one-who makes a hunter. Where the culture's attention sits, the words multiply: there is no single word for "kill," because a clean kill, a devouring kill, and an oath-execution are not the same act.
A sworn word binds you. End a sentence with gar and you have staked your name. End it with sha and it is only smoke. End it with neither and it is an order.
zun zo tak gar.
it has come. sworn.
Phonology
Twelve consonants, four vowels. A syllable is a vowel, led by at most one consonant and closed by at most one. Words may open on bare breath, as in iz, eye. Stress always falls on the first syllable. The classes are not decoration: the branch a letter wears in the script names the way it is made in the throat.
The forbidden letters are exactly the soft ones: b, f, l, p, and the vowel e. What remains is struck (k g t d), hissed (x sh z th), and growled (r n m v). The tongue is spoken low and hard because the throat that shaped it never bargained, it commanded.
The Carved Marks
A true alphabet, featural and carved. Every consonant is a vertical stave (the bone) wearing a branch that names its class: a straight gash for struck sounds, a split fork for hissed, a bent barb for growled. Vowels carry no stave; they are the breath, drawn as eyes and maws. Every glyph fills one uniform cell.
The spark
A raised diamond divides one word from the next. The spacebar writes it. Words are never run together.
The seal
A solid diamond closes a sentence. Nothing follows it on the line. A period writes it; question and exclamation collapse into it.
The cage
A true name is never written bare, lest the written name act. Cage marks wrap it. Type [brackets] to cage.
One cell, always
Nothing rises above the line, nothing hangs below it. A mark that strays its cell is an escaped thing, and the culture writes on bone and narrow stone.
zun zo dax tak gar.
Because every glyph holds one cell, lines pack as tight as the hand allows. This is by design: a tongue carved onto narrow surfaces cannot afford letters that wander.
The Laws
Primitive in the oldest sense: few parts, no exceptions, every part load-bearing. No tense, no gender, no plural. What the grammar tracks instead is weight: whether a word merely passes, or binds. The first six laws are canon; the last three grew the tongue in v2 without softening it.
The Words
Every attested root, plus the v2 growth: canonized coinages, relational particles, derivation heads, and the thickened demon domains. Search by sound or by meaning; filter by class. Compound and coined words carry their etymology underneath.
Where The Words Multiply
A culture pours words where its attention sits. For demons that is killing, debt and oath, rank and submission, and the hunt. One word for "kill" was far too few, so the tongue splits each field finely. This is where its character lives.
The Empty Places
The tongue holds deliberate holes where a softer language keeps its warmth. v2 does not fill them. It makes the absence official and gives each void a single sanctioned approximation built only from hard roots. The workaround is meant to feel wrong; the discomfort is the meaning.
A void may be gestured at only by recombining hard roots. It is never granted its own root. One concept, the free gift, has no workaround at all: to give (dov) makes a debt (dag), so a debtless gift is a contradiction the grammar cannot state.
Counting In Three
The base is three. Numbers are cut as short gashes, at most three to a row, at most three rows to a cell. Counts are spoken additively: gor zak, three-one, is four. The full cell of nine is vash, the brand, and great counts are reckoned in brands.
vash vash vash vash gor zak = four brands (36) plus four = 40. A chronicler reckoning long time would sooner round in brands than count to an exact forty; precise great numbers are rare. The Arabic figures around this record are the human cataloguer's apparatus, never Helltongue.
Recovered Lines
Attested sentences and re-translated passages, each with its literal gloss and a note on how it works. Read left to right; the spark divides words, the seal ends the line.
English to Helltongue
Type on the left; the carved tongue answers on the right, with its romanization beneath. This reader does more than swap words: it throws the verb to the front the way the First Law demands, reads your intent to pick the right weight and aspect, flags every word the tongue has no root for, and offers sharper demon words where English is vague.
The Helltongue Font
The carved featural typeface. Type romanized Helltongue and the font does the work: sh and th fuse, the spacebar writes the spark, a period writes the seal, [brackets] cage a name. Install it, or drop the woff2 into any page with one @font-face rule.
Embed: @font-face{font-family:'Helltongue';src:url('fonts/Helltongue.woff2')} Renamed from the working title Demoniac. The .ttf is for desktop install; downloads work straight from this page.
